How to watch
This lecture starts on 28 October at 5:00pm (UK).
Summary
What is Jewish philosophy? A two-part series exploring the character of Jewish Philosophy.
Taking up the story in the crucial 17th century, the second session explains how the secular turn in modern continental philosophy effectively erased the Hebraic tradition. It examines the tensions, challenges, and eventual break-up of the ambitious project for a wholly secular Enlightenment, but goes on to show how, from the shards of fragmentation, new philosophical grounds emerge to defend Hebraic thought and legitimise the worship of the Jewish God.
Alan Bekhor
Alan Bekhor is the son of Iraqi Jews who settled in Britain in 1950, and is a writer, philosopher and business entrepreneur. His intellectual interests are centered on the connections between religion, ethics and politics. He holds a master’s degree in Intellectual History from the University of Sussex and has presented academic papers at various institutions, including the London School of Economics, the Forum for European Philosophy, the London Society for the Study of Religion, and Lockdown University. A longstanding supporter of institutions upholding civilizational standards, he founded Standpoint, a magazine of ideas edited by Daniel Johnson, which made a notable contribution to British intellectual life from 2008 to 2022. It was once described by Niall Ferguson as “an island of seriousness in an ocean of trivia.” In 1999, Bekhor, who lives in London, founded an international shipping business, now run by his son, called British Marine. His first book, The Hebraic Thread is available here on Amazon.
