Contemporary and Sublime: The Sensational Art of Anish Kapoor

Lose yourself in the mysterious sculptures and monumental installations of Anglo-Indian artist Anish Kapoor that seek to both disorient and expand the senses. Frequently collaborating with engineers, Kapoor’s work is fabricated in an array of beautiful materials such as mirrors, polished metals, stone, wax, coloured pigment, smoke, and air, creating illusions that warp perception and open unfamiliar dimensions of time and space. Drawing on recent research and a current curatorial approach to his work, this presentation considers how Kapoor’s work evokes the spiritual and a sense of the sublime, and whether this sublime quality is only a matter of “smoke and mirrors” or whether there is metaphysical truth at stake.
