Summary
“Misunderstanding of the present is the inevitable consequence of ignorance of the past.” So said Marc Bloch (1886–1944), the great historian who, one month ago, was reinterred in the pantheon, the resting place of the greats. He is the only historian to be so honoured. He created a new school of history and believed passionately in interdisciplinary study. In World War I, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre, in World War II he joined the resistance. Captured and tortured by the infamous Klaus Barbie, He spent his last months in prison, comforting other younger members of the group. He was shot on June 16, 1944. To quote Herman Cohen, “Any fool can put a bullet through the most beautiful brain.”

Trudy Gold was the CEO of the London Jewish Cultural Centre and a founding member of the British delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). Throughout her career she taught modern Jewish history at schools, universities, and to adult groups and ran seminars on Holocaust education in the UK, Eastern Europe, and China. She also led Jewish educational tours all over the world. Trudy was the educational director of the student resources “Understanding the Holocaust” and “Holocaust Explained” and the author of The Timechart History of Jewish Civilization.
