This lecture starts on 7 June at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

In the 19th century steam transformed the world in the way that the internet has in more recent times. In this lecture we explore the ways in which railways impacted art and architecture through the works of Turner, Menzel, and Monet, as well as the great railway stations described as “the cathedrals of the 19th century,” along with the grand hotels and restaurants that accompanied them.
