Summary

The Hungarian Jewish Emmerich Kálmán (Kálmán Imre, 1882–1953) composed some of the most successful operettas of the “Silver Age” of Viennese operetta, such as The Gypsy Princess and Countess Maritza. Wisely declining the poisoned offer of “honorary Aryan” status, he chose instead to cross the Atlantic and attempted to adapt his style to American taste.
