This lecture starts on 18 May at 5:00pm (UK).
Summary
It was clear the end of the Second World War would mark Britain’s gradual withdrawal from empire; and thus the Attlee Labour government drew up hasty, if not over-hasty, plans to withdraw from the Indian subcontinent, This happened in 1947 with the creation of India and West and East Pakistan, marking the beginning of the final stage of Britain’s 19th-century empire of world dominance, which had already effectively ended as a result of two world wars.
