How to watch
This lecture starts on 29 April at 5:00pm (UK).
Summary
Joseph Stalin (d. 1953) was one of the worst tyrants in history, murdering millions of his own people. Yet he outlawed antisemitism, at the cost of denying any Jewish identity in Russia. He supported the establishment of Israel and then turned violently against the young socialist Jewish state. His ”reign” began the propagandist demonisation of Israel and appalling persecutions, including “the murdered poets,” the Slánský trials, and the Doctors’ plot. This lecture explores the terrifying contradictions that faced the Jewish people in Soviet Russia.
