How to watch

This lecture starts on 21 April at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

June 22, 1941 marked the beginning of Hitler’s invasion of Russia. Following the German army into battle, the Einsatzgruppen were dedicated to wiping the Jews off the face of the Earth. From then until the end of the war, the Nazis murdered a third of the world’s Jews, mutating from death by bullets to the creation of death camps as a more efficient way of achieving the Nazi war aim. This was a vast operation that soon culminated in the Allied declaration of December 17, 1942. Yet there was very little attempt at rescue. As late as the spring of 1944, after the invasion of Hungary, 436,000 Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in a three-month period. The Jews of Palestine understood the nature of Jewish powerlessness and vowed never again. These ideas still mark the Jewish state. Did the world really stand by?
