Summary
On March 2, 1919, the Emir Feisal, hero of the Arab world, wrote “We Arabs … look with deepest sympathy on the Zionist movement … We wish the Jews a hearty welcome home … The movement is national and not imperialistic. There is room in Syria for us both. Indeed, I think that neither can be successful without the other.” In many circles Zionism is now a term of abuse. Anyone who supports Israel is maligned as racist, supremacist, and even genocidal. How did the movement that arose in the latter part of the 19th century as a response to modern antisemitism become so misunderstood and hated. This presentation explores the “Zionist idea” and its consequences for today.
