Summary

In November 1914, Shaykh al-Islam Ürgüplü Shayri, the highest religious authority of the caliphate in Constantinople, called for jihad against Britain, France, and Russia, in the name of Sultan-Caliph Mehmed V, the Commander of the Faithful. 14,000 kilometres away, in Australia on New Year’s Day 1915, the call to jihad was heard by two Muslim cameleers—with devastating consequences.
