How to watch

This lecture starts on 29 October at 7:00pm (UK).

Summary

The 19th century was one of seismic change at a bewildering pace. As empires crumbled, the new modern world brought unprecedented challenges. Social, economic, and political unrest led to tribalism. Theories of race and social Darwinism abounded. Newly emancipated Jews were often at the forefront of the changes. Gradually, the “longest hatred” mutated into a race hatred. A new term was coined—antisemitism.
