President Trump gave Putin the red carpet treatment in Alaska, welcoming the Russian leader back to the international stage—much to the anger of Ukraine and the US’s traditional allies in NATO and across Europe. He then met the Ukrainian leader, accompanied by a phalanx of top European leaders, at the White House. But has anything been achieved? Are we any closer to peace, or did the US president hand his Russian counterpart a massive propaganda victory only to receive nothing in return?

Hagai M. Segal is a multi award-winning academic, consultant, and analyst, specializing in geopolitics, terrorism, and the Middle East. A New York University London professor and Oxford University tutor, Hagai sits on the UK Steering Committee of OSAC (the Overseas Security Advisory Council, U.S. Department of State), served for a decade on the London First Security and Resilience Advisory Board, and has worked with and advised numerous government agencies and other public bodies across the globe, including the FBI, the Metropolitan Police and the British Armed Forces. Hagai also helped plan and facilitate a round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in 2004, and uses maps from these and other negotiations in his teaching/education sessions.
