How to watch

This lecture starts on 8 September at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

At Vienna the victors (as well as France) sought to redraw the map of Europe to what it was pre-1789. They did so by restoring the old monarchies, but made no concessions to the liberal ideas spread by the French Revolution. Britain was not happy, and was one of the main causes of the Conference System established at Vienna’s collapse in the early 1820s. However, one great historical legacy was the idea that diplomacy could be used to prevent war.
