This lecture starts on 14 July at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

After the of World War II, Britain’s new Labour Government sought to get out of India with undue haste. Lord Mountbatten was appointed as viceroy to see this policy through. It was, in the end, agreed that British India should be divided between a Muslim Pakistan and a Hindu India. The Partition of 1947 led to a dreadful death toll on both sides. In this lecture, we examine all sides of this inglorious end for what Britain had once regarded as the jewel in the crown.
